There is a wealth of young talent in South Africa’s performing arts industry that needs to be nurtured and developed, says Denay Willie, chief executive of the Rainbow Academy. Willie has been pursuing this ideal for the past five years through the academy, a non-profit school of performing arts and business that is based in Adderley Street in the city centre.
The academy, launched in 2010, seeks to educate and empower young people aged 17 to 25 in the arts, performance and creative industries. Students audition to participate in a year-long training and job placement programme, and graduate with recognised qualifications and practical job experience.
